So after twenty five hours at the mongolian border and a night on the floor of some mongolian’s house in sub zero temperatures we were totally unprepared for we are in to our final country and boy is it cool! Lots of Vodka! Good tunes from spidermix!
We’re finally back in Russia after a 12 hour border crossing overnight, so as I type I still haven’t slept and we have 400km to go to get to the Mongolian border for entry tomorrow morning… Barnaul’s actually quite nice, as is this random bit of Russia (The Altai Republic). Car seems to be holding up but the test will be Mongolia as the roads are pretty good here at the moment…
In other news, I haven’t washed for 5 days now, it’s not pleasant, I have no clean clothes left and this doesn’t look set to change for the next week or so. We are all so dirty that people in cities look at us like we are tramps - maxing out the dirt tan…
God knows if there is internet in Mongolia before Ulaan Bataar, but we will keep you updated when we can.

Had a mixed day today, started off well then we hit bad roads, got some air, punished the suspension. The result: cracked chassis. Got some bloke to weld it back together in Semey. Looks a bit dodgy but it seems to work. Now at the russian border waiting to see whether we can get out of kazakh before midnight otherwise we have outstayed our visa registration grace period which may mean we are banned for life. No great loss. Tom x
We’re currently in Almaty waiting for The Team’s car to be fixed….hopefully will be back on the road again tomorrow morning. Kyrgrzstan was incredible, two days driving through the mountains and a big 3000m pass. Also camped by a beautiful lake north of Osh. We have good advice on fast roads to take up to Semey so hopefully should be out of Kazakhstan in no time, and Mongolia feeling very close now.
We whizzed through Uzbekistan in a day to make up time lost repairing the cars. Cool scenery highlighted by AK-47 patrolled tunnel into the Ferghana Valley. Ferghana and Andijan didn’t seem that extremist as we once thought, although army presence near Kyrgyz border noticably bigger than anywhere else. Getting out of Uzbek took longer than getting in, however this was made up by the Kyrgyz side taking twenty minutes. Happy days! Good feelings about Kyrgyz so far, kipping in the LP recommended Osh Guesthouse at the moment. Heading to the market this morning and then the 3000m high road to Bishkek. read more »
We’re at the border in a place near Tashkent called Chinaz. It took 7 hours to get through!
Finally left Baikonur without fifth gear, got to Turkistan to see Kazakhstan’s biggest monument. For the size of Kazkhstan the monument was a little bit of a let down. Gobi Taxi’s spare wheels got nicked during the night. Won’t go back to Turkistan in a hurry.
